More Nana

My cousin, Whitney, over at Tales of a Domestic Diva wrote a beautiful post of some of her memories of Nana. Because us cousins grew up in the same town doing most everything together we have many of the same memories.

I would like to share a personal memory here on my blog, but please check out Whitney's post. It's great.

During the beginning of the second semester of my freshman year in college I found out I was pregnant. I was about to turn 19.

I grew up in a christian home, as did my parents. So my disobedience was very disappointing. Some responded with grace and others did eventually. However, my Nana's response is the one I remember the most.

I had driven the 2 1/2 hrs to her house for the weekend. The night I arrived I was sitting in bed in the blue room (family will understand) and Nana was sitting on the bed with me. My words to Nana were, "Nana, there is something I have to tell you. I'm gonna have a baby." Her first response was to rush to the bathroom, lean against the counter and repeat "Oh, Dear Lord." over and over. But then, after a few seconds, she returned to the bedroom, made sure it was RC's baby too, then took my hands and prayed with me. She hugged me and kissed me and told me she loved me and RC and our baby.

The next morning while Papa and I ate our eggs, bacon, and toast, Nana told Papa that I was gonna have a baby. She didn't hide it, nor was there any shame in her voice. Papa just said, "Really?" and then went on eating.

Nana holds a very special place in my heart because I held a very special place in hers. The amazing thing about Nana is that every single one of us blessed to be part of her family and friends can say that. Each one of us held a very special place in her heart and a had our own special relationship with her.

Nana loved like few others.

I love it Bridge. It made me cry because she did the same for me. Jon and I had only been married a year. He was still in school and the last thing we had planned was to have a baby. I took a pregnancy test at her house. She was the first to know I was expecting a baby (even before Jon!) I had tears puddled in my eyes when I cam out of the bathroom. She hugged me to tight I could not breathe. She assured me that "Jon is a wonderful man! He will be just fine with this news!" She led me to the kitchen table and prayed with me...then she offered to feed me. LOL. Nana was always a soft place to fall. I miss her.

Sweet story, Bridget. We should all be more like your grandmother. I love it that she prayed with you like that. Obviously it made and impact on you.

Bridget, Your blog just inspires and uplifts me with your wonderful stories of your family. I loved reading about your dad last year around his birthday, and it is less than a month away now and I realized I don't even know his name to put him on the Sept 15 birthday list! Let me know, ok? And your story about Nana is so heartwarming. You are a terrific writer, and I appreciate you share your family, faith and feelings with us! Love, Joan
