Not Home Yet

Surely you can tell by the title that Bobo is not home yet.

The doctor wants to wait till he has the results of the cultures back so that he better knows which antibiotic to send Bobo home on.

Hopefully tomorrow.

Sigh.

Yuck and Ouch

Bobo is still in the hospital. He's doing great, the doctor just hasn't released him yet. The Wound Specialist came today and changed his packing and bandage. It didn't hurt as much as Bobo was scared. He was a champ though. They are gonna let me change it tomorrow while the nurses look on so I can feel more comfortable doing it at home.

Lovely.

I took a picture of the hole in his neck with my phone. If you want to see it then text me and I'll send it to you. =)

We did get to walk around outside today. Bobo really enjoyed getting some fresh air. Though, his daddy bought him a new nintendo game that has kept him quite occupied.

Hopefully he'll be coming home tomorrow.

Post Op

Today went great.

Surgery was delayed because of an emergency surgery and a small town that only has one surgeon on duty today. And that's really not a big deal except Bobo couldn't have anything to eat or drink and we all know how uncomfortable that is. He handled it like a champ, though.

The procedure took about 20 minutes and by 2:00 he was back in his room eating some jell0.

However, now starts the hard part. The surgeon couldn't sew him up because the infection would just refester. So now we must keep the wound packed with antibacterial gauze-like stuff and change it occasionally.

Basically, yuck for mom and ouch for Bobo.

We don't know when he will be released but the longer he stays the less I have to change. So I'm in no hurry. =)

Thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes.

*and we've decided to delay moving till next weekend.

Update on Bobo

Well, things haven't gone as hoped.

Tuesday morning Bobo woke up with the swelling in his neck increasing and discomfort when he swallowed. By 5:30 p.m. he was running a fever of 101.5. So off to the ER we went.

They admitted him. I spent the night at the hospital with him and around 6:00 this morning the surgeon came by. Surgery it is.

It is scheduled for some time tomorrow morning. We are still not sure how long he will have to remain in the hopsital after the procedure.

He is doing fine and is enjoying the attention. He seems to like hospital food and loves getting to read and play on his Nintendo as much as he wants. He has continued to have a low grade fever that spiked this afternoon only to 101.5 again so no biggie. His discomfort level has decreased and other than having to sleep at a thirty degree angle (to keep his neck elevated bc of the swelling) he is happy.

He keeps saying he is ready to be done with this and is therefore ok with the surgery. So are we.

Thanks in advance for your prayers.

Consultation Results

We saw the surgeon yesterday for Bobo's neck.

After having the CT scan last Wednesday and discovering the abscess, our family doctor prescribed a stronger antibiotic. We quit the amoxicillan and started cephalexin on Thursday. Since then Bobo's neck has been returning to its normal size.

The surgeon thinks we should continue with the antibiotic and see if that can take care of this before we do any cutting.

RC and I (and Bobo) agree.

We are very pleased with this and are very hopeful that the antibiotic will take care of the problem. Please join us in praying it does so.

Science Experiment AKA Answered Prayer

The last two years of homeschooling we didn't do many science experiments or projects. Very, very few actually.

Well, this year I committed to using our new curriculum to the fullest. Therefore, determining to do every experiment and project within our capabilities.

You're probably thinking, "Good for you. So what?"

The 'so what' is that for me this is harder than it should be. My mind somehow sees things as harder than they really are. I think maybe it's the perfectionism I struggle with.

Anyway, we had a science experiment to do on Tuesday. It required a d-cell 1.5v battery, a 1.5watt light, and some bell wire. We had none of those things. And I wasn't sure what a 1.5watt light looked like or what bell wire was and where I would find it.

So Monday evening I headed to Walmart. I started in the lighting isle. Nothing. The smallest watt they had was 4watts. I headed to the groceries and called the Hubs. While I was getting some necessities, he looked online and discovered that 1.5watt lights were tiny. Think flashlight lights. Tiny flashlight lights.

So, after picking up some d-cell batteries I headed to the camping section and asked an employee if they had flashlight light bulbs. They did, but the smallest wattage was 2.4. I decided to risk it.

Then, I'm gonna be honest, I kinda wimped out and before really looking down all the isle's I just bought some picture hanging wire bc I knew where that was and it was metal. It should work, right?

Wrong.

Tuesday afternoon, while the kids where playing after lunch I started preparing the experiment. I taped one piece of wire to the bottom of the battery and one piece of wire to the top. Then I tried to wrap them both around the bottom of the teeny tiny light bulb. Nothing. Nada. Zippo. Zilch.

Hubs tried to help, but everything we came up with failed. So I did what I usually do when things aren't going the way I planned and are harder than I expected...I pouted.

Thinking that we were gonna have to do without the experiment, I headed back to my bedroom for a minute and hubs headed back to work. Or so I thought.

While I was in my bedroom, I prayed a rather frustrated but desperate prayer. Lord, I don't know how to do this. I don't know what I need to make this work. Please show me. Please help me.

Then I headed back out to the living room. And in walked my father-in-law asking if I needed help with some electrical stuff. Yup. Hubs had walked next door and asked for help on my behalf while I was asking God.

My FIL knew exactly what bell wire was and happened to have some. When he returned with it he helped me attach it to the battery and then showed me how to roll the end into a circle so I could set the light bulb down into it and then told me to touch the side of the light bulb with the other wire. And guess what?

Well, I'm sure you know. It worked. Beautifully.

And when hubs walked back in the house and asked if his dad had been able to help and then smiled all proud-like when I said yes, I quickly made it clear that it was God who worked all this out. It was God who knew I would ask his help, and it was God who gave hubs the idea to ask for help. And it was all bc of God.

Then I smiled. And I thanked Him and him. And I went on in my homeschooling day even more confident that I am not doing this alone.

OK Senate vs. Home Schooling

A few weeks ago, in the dark of night, I heard, "You're house will be under attack." I didn't feel the need to jump out of bed swinging, but I also had no clue what it really meant. While I believe there are many aspects to that statement, I think the following can be one of them.

There are two new bills to be proposed in the OK senate on Monday, February 2. I first saw this story here. It intrigued me as I felt our home schooling rights were being stepped on a little bit. So I started doing a little research. First, I found this. I felt a little better considering the Chairman of the Senate Educational Committee, State Senator John Ford said,

“Our home school community is a vital asset to this state. The way home schooling parents currently educate their children is a process that has worked fine, and I feel it is important for them to have the freedom in determining what will best serve their children’s needs.”
So, he, at least, is opposed to these two bills. Upon further research, I discovered the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) was in action on these two bills. See here for Bill 472 and here for Bill 308.

So, how does this relate to the house under attack thing? We home school our children. My wife has prayed about it since we started having children, and we pray about it before every school year. We didn't home school Bobo or Bear until we moved to Altus. We have absolutely nothing against Altus schools, we just felt the Lord was telling us it was time to teach our children at home. Again, we pray about it before every school year, because we don't want to be disobedient to God. We will put them in the public school system as soon as God doesn't want us to home school anymore. This is the Lord's will for our life in this season, so we do it.

We believe it is a parent's right and God-given duty to teach his or her child(ren). See Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4 among others. The fact that society has created public (and even private) school systems to teach children en mass, does not change this truth. In fact, it endangers it. Read Matthew 18:6, 7 and 14. Does a worldly school system not have the potential to put major stumbling blocks in front of our children?

Both of my parents were school teachers, and Bridget's mother still is. They taught/teach with integrity and respect for the children, their parents, and God. I have nothing against the teachers. They are doing their job. We, as parents, are doing ours. If the government feels the need to control that, then we are headed for a sad day indeed. I encourage you to pray about this issue and then act as God would direct you. We are sending an email to our state senators. Read up on it yourself, and make up your own mind. Don't just take my word for it.

Be encouraged, God is in control.

Today is Love Note Day. So here are a few notes of love:

To my wife:
I love you. I can't describe it any better than that. You are my sunsushine. You make me happy; you can make me mad, but you don't do that very often. You put up with me. God has said that our marriage was a miracle; well, I'm glad it's our miracle. I'm proud of our children. You are a wonderful mother, and you'll only get better. Thank you for 10 1/2 years of marital bliss (most of the time)! I love you.

To my children:
I love you. You guys are the best. From #1 son to baby girl, you are my pride and joy. You are so much fun, and I love coming home to a family excited to see me. Thanks for being so cool! I love you.

To my family ('rents and others):
I love you. Thank you for your love and support throughout my life. Thank you for loving my little family. Thanks for letting us use your pool and cable and internet and sugar and kool aid and Oreos and everything else. You guys are my foundation. I love you.

To my friends:
I love you. Whether you're a new friend or one who's been with me through the permed hair and Speedo stages of life, you are one of my most valued treasures. Thank you for making me laugh, for laughing with me and at me. You are the best. And I'm sure you owe me money. I love you.

To my God:
I love You. You saved my life. You are my rock, my fortress, my provider, my savior, my joy and my strength. You are the Ancient of Days. You are the Alpha and Omega. You are awesome. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for loving me and forgiving me and bringing me this far. I look forward to continuing our journey together. You are life. I love You.
